RCEM: Bed occupancy – time for a new message
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) kindly invited me to speak at their Policy Forum. My case was not so much that 85% is the wrong answer, but that bed occupancy is the wrong question.

It’s no surprise that medicine squeezes out surgical beds in winter, so why does it still catch us out? Ditto for the holidays. It’s very frustrating for surgeons, and puts urgent patients at risk. How hard can it be to plan ahead properly?
